January, 2005  (Cont.)

You can compare this picture with the same view photographed in August and found on page 9 of the train pages. Adding the highways immediately changed the scope of the layout. My first adjustment was to bring the elevator track closer to the road, which gave me room to add yet another siding for boxcar storage and selection. (After completing the makeup of all the trains on the layout, I then sold about 2 dozen varied railcars on ebay over the past several months.)

After the completion of the SCRAP & SALVAGE, my objective then turned to filling the huge void that existed between LOWPORT and the BUSINESS DISTRICT. Again, the addition of the highway material, brought the project into a clearer focus.

Again, comparing this current view with the 5th picture on page 9, you can see that a great deal of scenic work has occurred. I realized that this town, which in the near future will be named NONAVILLE, needed to expand outside the BUSINESS DISTRICT area, and show growth on the two main travel arteries. Since the plan had always been to have a residential area between the mountain and city, that meant that the longer highway area would need to be “commercially developed.”

Although the signage is not up yet, the building to the left of the water tower will be designated the CITY OF NONAVILLE MAINTENANCE SHED. To the right of the tower, and proceeding up the road are MUFFY’S MUFFLER SHOP, and CITY GASOLINE.

Across the highway junction we find the older, and still full service, TEXACO STATION, and a FARMERS MARKET, adjacent to the entrance of the LOWPORT FREIGHT area.

Presently it’s still not completely supplied well, but eventually light poles, street signs, street repair needs, etc. will be stored at this facility.
