First Day of Summer, 2005

Another very busy semester.  Lots of travel, lots of concerts, and a little project called doctoral orals seem to have monopolized most of my efforts since January.  Here it is, June, and I had anticipated completing two projects around the layout this past five months.  First, I wanted to complete the bottom inside of the “J” and over the past four months, little by little, I was able to pretty much finish this section.

Secondly, I wanted to complete that proposed tunnel below the mine peninsula.  This didn’t happen.  So, to stay on schedule . . . . .  Schedule? What schedule?!?….. I put in all my spare time the past four weeks on the tunnel and immediate area.  Taking hours out for two compositions, seven days out in Texas at a band camp, six days in our Lee University Music Camp, sleeping five or six hours a night, rehashing the season closing episodes of “Lost”, over-utilizing the pause button on my VCR,  and DESPAIRING through the final episode of “Enterprise”, I probably had about 13 hours remaining for “train-time”.

Somewhere in there, I also painted our newly decorated master bedroom for THE WONDERFUL WIFE WHOM I’VE MENTIONED BEFORE, proving once more that there is no limit to the sacrifice grown men will make for model trains!

Obviously, the unifying factor between the residential and industrial portion of this area is the vast wooded area. (Just to check the quality of my work, I did incorporate 5 ready-made trees into the diorama and decided that mine look just as good.  Not to mention that I could build nearly 60 kit trees for the same
price as the ready-made five!)

Here, the inside of the “J” is viewed from above the mine peninsula area.

The industrial area consists of the Railroad Design “Delaney Ironworks” and another use of the “United Trucking Transfer Terminal” kit from Cornerstone. One change here. The newer Terminal kits are not even close to being as thick as the original kit pictured earlier in these train pages. It only took about 10 minutes to cut out three of the doors.

Like the former building in town, I put in a new floor and “worker stuff”. The “boxes” and “crates” in the background are simply foam board cut into blocks and painted black or red.

The arch between the buildings appears in the original “Ironworks” configuration to be a truck passageway, however, I raised the buildings to facilitate the passage of boxcars.

We know something about these people....They have to be REALLY AVID TRAIN LOVERS to live THIS close to the tracks. As you can see, the local is rumbling past as Dad finishes the lawn. Stepping from his Cub Cadet, he notices that that Mom is pointing out something to his son, Jehozadak.......(OK, you name the kid! I can’t do EVERYTHING!!!)

Even with all the clickity-clacking rail noise, the local deer are impervious and certainly more interested in grazing than train-fanning.

Over to the left side of the “J”, highway traffic stops for the crossing lights. (This sharp looking Karmen Ghia with a travel trailer was a gift from a friend from Portland. Rick said it reminded him of the car he had in his young carefree days. Knowing Rick, I would imagine that in his “carefree” days he probably was
responsible for ALL those signs around the country like the one on the rear of that Billboard in the background!)

And now construction begins for the final tunnel on the Layout. I simply start with a chicken wire form . . .
(Note the rather barren background. There will be some changes coming.)
