November 2006 (Cont.)

Backed up to the rail yard are three new commercial enterprises. Left to right: R.C. Lake Manufacturing, LaBosky’s Motorcycle Repair and Vic’s Auto Alignment Shop. (Obviously the corrugated building is a Pikestuff Kit with add-ons, and the two smaller buildings come from JL Innovative, the same company that made the Pillar Crane I used up on the Mine Peninsula stairway and dock.)

I picked these three businesses because I though that each would give me a greater opportunity for a diversity of active “people-situations”.

Although it’s located near a railroad, Lake Manufacturing uses trucks for its shipping needs. I decided to go with a private lot beside the building because of the lack of “parking” space between the main building and the street. Plus it gives it a little better “private factory” look, I think.

Obviously the shop foreman up in the loft above the main floor is a “closet” railfan. After all, he has the best seat in the house! Here we spot him taking a look as the grain train pulls past his location.

I recently acquired an older Atlas model GP-40 and placed it on the grain train, replacing the GP-50 that had served there originally. That particular Athearn Geep 50 engine was moved up to the Highport area and now heads up the work train.

The Baroque-man GP-38, which never ran well in spite of five trips back to the factory, was relieved of duty and I “filed” it with one other Baroque-man engine I had acquired on ebay  (WHAT was I thinking?!?!) that would consistently run about 22 inches along the track before literally bouncing chaotically off the roadway and falling on its side. (Even with this remarkably animated example, I was never able to teach that trick to my dog!) Well, anyway, I now have an engine THAT ACTUALLY RUNS connected to the work train. . . .

Ok, let me think a moment . . just where DID I put those two defunct engines? . . .

Oh yeah. Now I remember . . .

I guess I should have at least stripped them first, but obviously, my reasoning skills at the time were blurred from the years of accumulated aggravation. May they both deservedly rest in peace somewhere in the Cleveland city landfill. Amen.
