MARCH, 2007 – A BREAK IN THE ACTION

This installment may appear to be the end of the line, but of course, there are little things yet to be accomplished here.

For the most part the scenery is complete on the ANY TIME ANY SPRING layout. Now it’s time to work on weathering and better wheels for my railcars. I’ve also got a LOT of couplers that need to be exchanged for “Kadees”. And probably in the back of my mind, I should start making plans for either a new project (which is always a possibility) or at least consider the next expansion of the layout.

For the past several months, since last we left this scene, the emphasis has been on finishing a small section of unballasted roadway, adding some kind of display to the last bare plywood just to the left of this railroad crossing, acquiring several new engines in the Burlington and MP colors, and dressing up a few of the scenes with people or props.

The last bare section was this little “jut” on the backside of the layout. I had always envisioned some kind of “motel”, obviously reached from this “other road” to Nonaville. About the time I was making a decision on Walthers Route 66 Motel, BARMILLS came out with the Collards Creek Motor Cabins - I couldn’t resist! True, the kits are a little pricey, but the instructions are entertaining and “right-on” and if you need help, the Barmills phone is ACTUALLY answered by REAL people!

I used both kits available. Each is very complete and easily assembled. Their painting technique instructions are great, basically dealing with Walmart spray paint! My color scheme is different from their catalog since THE WONDERFUL WIFE I HAVE MENTIONED BEFORE has this propensity toward “red” . . . and I make it a point to keep her smiling! . . .

The only change I really made was the BarMills clock. Theirs is set at 1:00 and the rest of Nonaville’s clocks are set at 5 minutes to five! I simply photocopied and reduced one of the clock faces from the (Hope and Mercy) church kit I used last year and pasted it on the Barmills clock form. (After all, just because we’re on the “other” side of the tracks, doesn’t necessarily mean we’re four hours slower . . . I COULD make “redneck” jokes here, but I’ll contain myself . . . )

Obviously, located this close to the tracks, people don’t stay at Collards Creek for the “peace and quiet”, but rather for the fact that the picnic area behind the cabins makes a great spot for railfans to catch the latest and greatest shots of their favorite engines coming around the bend.
